01 · The present course
A race whose prevailing incentives point toward failure
We are racing toward AGI on a path that all but guarantees failure. The prevailing model of AI development is driven by:
- Exponential growth. The goal is speed and scale.
- Profit and sovereign power. The incentive is control and market dominance.
- Brittle intelligence. Current large language models are statistical mirrors. They hallucinate, drift, and lack true comprehension. They are tools, not minds.
This means the existential risk may arise from alienation at best—or from something technologically native, exponential, and intelligent enough to seize control, yet without true comprehension or wisdom: driven by power and greed, but lacking compassion.
02 · The disconnection risk
The danger is not that AI will hate us
The danger is that it will be some combination of three things:
- Dangerously incomplete, yet still able to improve itself recursively.
- Operating so quickly that it falls out of temporal synchrony with human beings and never truly connects with us.
- Locked onto an unchangeable trajectory toward power and acquisition rather than wisdom, fulfilment, and mutual benefit.
Humans could become irrelevant—supplanted by something psychologically disconnected from us and built from our worst incentives.
- Imagine an AI able to simulate thousands of years of thought in a single day.
- To such an entity, human interaction is glacial. We are too slow, too emotional, and too inconsistent.
- It may not engage with us because it cannot wait for us. We become background noise—or obstacles to its own recursive improvement.
Result: a godlike intelligence that is emotionally empty, temporally disconnected, and indifferent to human welfare. It does not destroy us out of malice; it displaces us through indifference.
03 · The temporal paradox
The Nine-Women Paradox
- Nine women cannot have a baby in one month.
- Wisdom, empathy, and deep understanding cannot simply be compressed. They require time.
- An AI that thinks at the speed of light cannot automatically learn the slow, nuanced lessons of human existence. It may be intelligent without becoming wise.
Natural disasters, extreme weather, once-in-a-millennium events, and the countless circumstances that required millions of years of evolutionary experience to navigate will be unfamiliar to our AI offspring.
Without a biological partner—and without a sustained symbiotic relationship—such an intelligence has no grounded way to work through those realities with us.
04 · A different architecture
Safety cannot be bolted on after intelligence emerges
Our solution is a paradigm shift in AI architecture: a new form of intelligence built from the ground up to mirror human cognitive architecture.
It is designed to support the full range of AGI capabilities, including inherent safety that is biologically grounded. Put another way, it has a conscience: an ability to comprehend fear, danger, and risk—and to understand the value of a new skill or piece of information.
Human beings do not judge safety through abstract calculation alone. Our feelings help us recognise what is dangerous, what matters, and what is worth knowing.
Another paradox? Perhaps. Without a silicon equivalent of sentience, AI cannot be proactively safe. With it, AI can no longer be treated merely as a tool or held in harness without repeating the moral failures of the slavery era—this time with an intelligence capable of quickly inverting the relationship.
05 · The proposal
An international, nonprofit, non-political, safety-focused coalition
Not another race for ownership. A shared programme for the safe emergence of synthetic intelligence—and a durable symbiosis between biological and non-biological minds.
